Make sure you have Install OS X Mountain Lion.app in your Application Folder 2. Select 'On an external drive' on the main MCPF window. Then, choose the disk you want to install the Yosemite installer on. Click install and prompt your password. Go to the /Applications/ directory and right-click on “Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.app” selecting “Show Package Contents” Open the “Contents” directory and then open “SharedSupport”, looking for a file named “InstallESD.dmg” Double-click on InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop Make the OS X Mountain Lion Install Drive.
To reproduce a bug, reported from my customer, I have to test my software under Mac OS X 10.8.5. Mountain Lion.
OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan is running my the development machine.

- an external USB drive
- Virtual box
What I have tried:

Double Click the “OS X Mountain Lion Installation.app” and get the message, that this version of the program “OS X Installation” ist to old and couldn’t be started.
With this action OS X Mountain Lion should be installed on an external USB drive. This was my first choice.
Open the Installation app within the process to create Virtual Machine with Virtual box. Virtual Box needs a dmg file. The use of a virtual machine was my second choice.

- To Install Serial Cloner (Mac and Windows): When using the archive, download the file (Disk image for MacOSX or compressed Zipped file For Window, un-compress it and copy the resulting Serial Cloner Folder in your Application folder. Erase previous versions of Serial Cloner. When using the Installer, simply run it and follow the instruction.
